The Patient Registration application is designed to provide a system of admitting, discharging, and transferring patients.
Integration is the key to an electronic medical record and an effective health information system. The Patient Registration module provides the first critical step to seamless integration by creating a Master Patient Index (MPI) that contains information pertaining to a patient's demographics, guarantor information, emergency contact, patient insurance, medical summary, and privacy information. The MPI record is the core of the electronic medical record. By capturing all information, a database on the patient's health is maintained, which can be used on subsequent visits.
The patient is registered at the time of arrival for admission at the health center, or through a pre-admit over the phone, or from the Scheduling application. In case of emergency where the patient's identity is unknown, a Quick Registration can be performed. For emergency cases where the patient's identity is known, but time is of the essence, New Triage Visit functionality quickly allows the patient to be registered. Further registration details are captured in the Health Information Management, Hospital, Clinic, and Emergency Department applications, which are integrated with Patient Registration. When the patient’s details are updated in any of these modules, the changes are reflected in all of them.
Upon initial admission, the patient is assigned a Medical Record number (MRN) and a Master Patient Index (MPI) is completed. A medical record number uniquely identifies the patient and is never changed. Once the MRN is created, an episode number is assigned to identify the specific visit for the indicated dates. Visits are assigned sequentially in chronological order, a patient's initial visit to the hospital generates an episode number of *****-0001 (where ***** is the patient's medical record number). Subsequent visits by the patient result in episode numbers of *****-0002, *****-0003, and so on.
To ensure optimal performance of the Patient Registration application, be sure to run the application on the main monitor only when using dual monitors.
